ALUMNI NEWS - 1970s


1970

Leonard Thompson ('70) is still working in India but also serving as part time faculty at Ozark Christian College. Last year College Press published a book he co-authored with Knofel Staton called "Angels and Demons".

1971

Dr. Tom Mobley recently had a textbook he co-authored published for the second time. Chaplaincy in Law Enforcement: What it is and How to do It involves community service. All proceeds from its sales go to the International Conference of Police Chaplains. Dr. Mobley serves as Chaplain with the FBI's Louisville Division in addition to serving as Senior Minister with the Nelson Christian church. Last year he was recognized for his 21 years of service with the Louisville Police Department, the last eleven years as Coordinator and Senior Chaplain. The book may be obtained through ICPC, P.O. Mark Oberst was recently named the Kentucky state winner of the National Citizenship Education Teacher Award sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The award has been given since 1999 to recognize classroom teachers for promoting citizenship with students. Mark teachers sixth grade social studies at Newport Middle School.

1972

Randy Snyder, senior minister with CrossView Christian Church, Dayton, Ohio begins his 25 th year of radio ministry in January, 2007. The radio ministry started as an experiment in Columbus, Ohio. The program originally was known as Lifeline but is now Cross View . It is broadcast on WFCJ (93.7FM), a station serving the Dayton-Cincinnati metro area. In the past the program was aired from stations in Columbus, Cincinnati, Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta. For more information about Cross View, call 937 885-7402.

Kim Huffman is the senior minister at the Goshen Christian Church, Goshen, IN. He is also a member of the Clowns of America International and performs as "Stoney the Clown" for churches and schools. He and three others whom he recruited to become professional clowns are members of the "Clowns for Christ" organization. His email address is preach@goshenchristianchurch.org.

1973

Congratulations to Bob Boswell who has been serving on the staff at Plainfield Christian Church in Indianapolis for 26 years. He is the longest serving minister ever at that church!

Dale and Jeanie (Graham, att'd) Meade are beginning their 33 rd year as missionaries in Colombia , South America .  

1974

Dr. Nigel (Ronald) Brush, recently promoted to Associate Professor of Geology at Ashland University, had a book published by Kregel Publications in Grand Rapids , Michigan. It is titled The Limitations of Scientific Truth. He has been at AU since 1999, having previously taught at the College of Wooster, the University of Akron and Kent State University. He resides in Wooster with his wife, Anne.

1975

On January 1, Chris Wynn will begin his third year as pastoral minister of Hadley Friends Meeting, Danville , Indiana.

1976

Mary Ann Reusch ('76) passed away on November 28, 2006 from cancer at the age of 53. She had coached women's sports at CCU. She received a Masters from the University of Cincinnati and taught at the Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies in Cincinnati.

Greg Comp has resigned his senior ministry with First Christian Church in Brazil, IN after 15 years. He has accepted the call to serve as senior minister with the Londonderry Christian Church in New Hampshire planted in 1977.

1977

Geneva Giles Burton ('77), widow of Richard Burton ('51), went to be with her Lord on October 20, 2006 at the age of 88. Richard and Geneva met as students at The Cincinnati Bible Seminary and celebrated 60 years of marriage in 1999. Those 60 years were spent serving together in ministries in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky . The final 18 years were with Corinth Christian Church in Stamping Ground, Kentucky . Geneva served as assistant librarian at CBS from 1967 until her retirement in 1983. She received her BS degree in 1977 and was the recipient of the Delta Alep Tau award for distinguished service and scholarship. Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Rosalyn (Dr. Kail) Ruffner, her son, Dr. Richard G. (Ann) Burton, four grandchildren and a great-grand-daughter. Funeral services were conducted in Grayson with Roger Rankin ('51) and Dr. Kail Ruffner ('61,'78).

Dr. Ronald L. Oaks ('77,'88) became the sixth president of Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, Missouri on August 24, 2006. In addition to the inaugural address by Dr. Oaks, the ceremony included reflections of the college's 50 years of service by professors Lloyd Pelfrey ('53, '55) and Gareth Reese ('54 '55).

1978

Ben Katt ('78, '80) is a published author. His book, "The Power of Persuasive Preaching" is available at Amazon. Dan ('71, '78) is proud of his "little brother." He says, "I have seen Ben dream, pray, work and wait and finally with the marketing efforts of his wife, see his dream come to fruition."

Cheryl (Otero) Wissmann has been granted her PhD in Practical Theology from the University of St. Andrews in October, 2005. Her topic was Worship Practice in the Churches of Christ, Central Luzon, Philippines. Cheryl and her husband, Ross, work as missionary professors at International Christian College of Manila . They have four children and one grandchild.

Barry Thornton is the preaching Elder at the Paseo Verde Christian Church near Pohenix , AZ. In January, they completed the first phase of a new three million dollar building. A 1200 seat auditorium will follow. The congregation has moved from a landlocked three acres to their present site. Barry will also be one of the speakers for Symposium 2006 at the Christian Restoration Association in October.

1979

Tim and Peggy Seevers have moved to Crittenden, Kentucky to minister with the Sherman Church of Christ.

Phillip Neyhart
and his wife Phyliss are closing out their 17½ year ministry with the Lyndon Christian Church in Louisville, KY.
