ATHLETICS UPDATE
I’ll be honest, the month of March has
to be my most unproductive time of the year. Most of my weekends
are spent on the couch watching the excitement of March madness.
When my wife and I took our vows, “For better or worse”,
they certainly apply to my devotion to the NCAA men’s basketball
tournament. One reason that I become so involved with the tournament
are the personal stories of players and coaches that CBS does
such a good job telling through the documentaries in between games.
I have heard a lot of inspiring stories via CBS and the tournament,
but the most inspiring story involving college basketball I’ve
heard this year came right here from CCU.
Mike Price had a solid year as point guard
for the Eagles, earning second team all region honors while leading
us to an at large bid to the National Tournament and a 6th place
finish. Obviously, Mike experienced a number of milestones on
the basketball court, but the greatest milestone this season took
place off the court, in a very unlikely place. Mike comes from
an unchurched family and had never been baptized or shown the
love of Christ. Mike is also a resident of one of the roughest
neighborhoods in Cincinnati; and along with his journey to CCU
also came his journey to know and become a follower of Jesus Christ.
During a road trip to play Nichols State University, located in
New Orleans; Mike was baptized in the Gulf of Mexico by teammates
Justin Bilyeu and Papi Paprocki. I am sure at that time the angels
in heaven were throwing a louder party than the one going on at
Bourbon Street at that time!
Our basketball season came to end when we
did not achieve our goal of winning the National Championship,
but I'll take one more brother in Christ over a national championship
any day!
