LARGER THAN YOURSELF
On of the biggest perks of my job is not the University jet, the stock options, nor the company Porsche; ( OK, none of those really are true) but the many conversations that I have with faithful friends and alumni of the school. This past week I had the opportunity to speak with an alumnus of CCU who enrolled in the fall of '53, who after I decided I wanted to use his story for the e newsletter, wished to remain anonymous. Besides being an alumnus, he is also a faithful giver, volunteer, and moral supporter of Cincinnati Christian University from the day he enrolled in classes until today.
His story reminded me of the giving spirit of Christmas. Upon having his grown children ask what he wanted for Christmas, he simply replied- "Make a gift to the University in your mothers and my name, I want nothing else." I was blown away and asked him if he was kidding or serious, he replied "Of course I am serious. Instead of getting a gift from my kids that I am going to end up throwing into storage in six months I can invest in something that is larger than myself- training students that go on to lead churches. Long after I am gone that gift will still be making a difference, still being used."
The part of his story that caught me was "I can invest in something larger than myself". He has it right, when you invest in the kingdom work of CCU you are making an investment in something that makes an exponential, eternal difference. Over the past year I have seen the work of several CCU alumni in ministry and only seen a small portion of the big picture, of the truly huge ministry impact that the school is having. I think that we all have the desire to be a part of something that makes a difference beyond what we can imagine. Consider when someone asks this year what you want for Christmas you can answer the same way this faithful alumnus did and make an investment in something larger than yourself.
