Statement from the Board of Trustees of Cincinnati Christian University:
As you may have heard, Cincinnati Christian University recently underwent a comprehensive evaluation conducted by its accrediting agency, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). HLC identified a number of areas in need of improvement and issued a Show-Cause Order that requires CCU to present its case as to why accreditation should not be withdrawn. This process requires CCU to take a number of steps in the next year – including providing a Show-Cause Report to HLC that addresses HLC’s concerns and hosting a Show-Cause Evaluation – before the HLC Board of Trustees meeting in June 2020, at which point the HLC Board of Trustees will determine whether to continue CCU’s accreditation with or without monitoring or whether CCU’s accreditation should be withdrawn. The Board of Trustees of CCU fully respects and comprehends the seriousness of the Show-Cause Order and recent evaluation conducted by HLC. We accept responsibility for decisions which have led to this Show-Cause Order, as well as responsibility for the work necessary to demonstrate compliance with HLC’s standards.
Our administration, faculty, and staff have been working diligently since the evaluation to correct the issues which were brought to light by HLC’s review. Many of these issues have already been resolved and we are confident that our team will be able to demonstrate CCU’s compliance with HLC’s standards within the allotted time frame, although this is ultimately HLC’s determination to make.
Our priority has been and always will be our incredible students. We will continue to strive to put our students in the best position to succeed as they are educated to live a life transformed by the Truths of scripture and to advance the Kingdom and impact the world for Jesus. We also support and believe in the leadership, administration, faculty, and staff of CCU who dedicate their lives daily to serve our students.
CCU faces the same challenges many private Christian universities across the country are facing. We have been working hard to overcome these challenges and believe a solid foundation has been established over the past two years to set a positive course for the next chapter of CCU’s legacy. In the last two years, CCU’s Board of Trustees has worked to improve CCU’s academic and financial operations. CCU is in a more positive financial position than in years past.
In the past few days, there has been a great deal of information, speculation, and rumors regarding HLC’s Show-Cause Order, some of which has not reflected a full or unbiased understanding of CCU’s circumstances. Consistent with HLC’s requirements, CCU has provided disclosures to its students and faculty and will continue to update its website to keep all constituencies informed during this process. For our students, alumni, families, supporters, and friends, we are deeply sorry that we are in this situation. We ask for your prayers, support, and partnership as we navigate the challenging road ahead. As an alum, I will continue to fight to protect the reputation of my alma mater. As a pastor, I will continue to pray for and encourage the future Christian leaders that CCU is training and who are so desperately needed in our world. And as a Trustee, I will continue to look out for the best interest of our students; support our administration, faculty, and staff; and protect our valued partnerships with churches and individuals. I will also remain available to answer any questions or concerns with transparency and integrity.
Thank you for choosing to be a part of the solution for Cincinnati Christian University moving forward into the future. Please join us as we pray and work to achieve the mission that God has called us to and advance the message of Jesus to our world.
Again, we sincerely apologize for any confusion this situation may have caused. I invite you to contact myself, any of our Trustees, or Tom Thatcher, Provost, if you have questions or concerns.
